You can access all my freely available online fiction over on qazyfiction.com.
This includes Above Ground, a post-apocalyptic adventure fantasy serial set in a world where humans live beneath the surface, and monsters roam the earth. The Affected Parade (Book 1) has drawn to a close, with sequels to be announced. There is also a load of short stories and bonus content available.
The other online serial on qazyfiction.com is DarkSight, a horror serial set in modern-day London. Maeve is a small-town Irish girl who moves to the UK to start a new job -- pity that there are even more demons in the big city than there were back home.
You can get news of updates for both serial via twitter, facebook, or by subscribing to the RSS feed.
Do head on over to check them out! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

plans for the future and other ramblings

So. News?
Above Ground
Book 1 of Above Ground is nearly done. Can you believe it? I started it just under a year ago. Woah. Future plans are to eventually write Book 2. But I'm feeling a little burnt out and want to work on something different first. So there will be a hiatus between books 1 and 2, and I'll be posting something else -- another serial. Yes. I am very excited about that. :-)
Of course, I'll still write AG shorts and bonus stories and such -- I just don't feel up to tackling another massive plot yet! I also want to make Book 2 more interactive (reader polls influencing the plot, maybe?) so I need time to plan things out properly.
I am thinking of making a video describing my plans for the future at some point soon so you can see my face and I can make puppy eyes at you so you can't be mad at me.
New serial!!
Some of you already know about it, but no one has read any of it yet. Ha! It might only update once / month, but that shouldn't drive you too mad as it will be very episodic -- each update will hopefully stand alone as a short story. More info on launch date and such will come sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Forums
Wish I could make them more active, don't know how. That's on my to-do list eventually.

the rose & bay award

mood:
excited
[Cross posted on wordpress.]
Online fiction now has an award!
Thanks to weblit.us, I discovered that Elizabeth Barrette, who's behind Crowdfunding Creativity, with the help of friends, has set up the Rose & Bay Award.
What Is the Rose and Bay Award?
The Rose and Bay Award focuses on a growing business model known as "crowdfunding" or "cyberfunded creativity," which directly connects creative people and patrons of the arts online. This award recognizes exemplary projects and enthusiastic patrons. It spans five categories: Art, Fiction, Poetry, Other Project, and Patron. (Other Project includes any cyberfunded creativity that isn't art, fiction, or poetry -- or that spans more than one category.)
The nomination period runs until January 31, 2010, with voting running through February.
This project needs our support. Imagine how this could expand! It would be cool to see new sub-sections added e.g. Best new entrant, or genre-based awards, and so on!
What are you waiting for?
Go nominate your favourite works of web fiction!
(Hint hint?)

chapter 23
Dec. 24th, 2009 | 01:17 pm
Chapters 23... the longest chapter by far, I think! Also posted in two parts.
Chapter 23
“Shiloh!” Amber moved forward to give the woman a kiss on the cheek. “I wasn’t sure we’d see you here.”
The woman smiled, half-embraced Amber, her eyes barely leaving Silver. “I’m covering for Max,” she replied, her voice a throaty purr.
Silver smirked. “Wouldn’t that involve you being inside, working?”
Was that a joke? Silver, making a joke? Lilith could hardly believe her ears; he had been so taciturn around her, she had come to assume that that was just his personality.
Shiloh gave Silver a lingering kiss on his cheek, then nodded at Lilith, taking in the fang necklace with the quirk of an eyebrow.
Silver looked uncomfortable. He cleared his throat. “This is—.” Then he paused, hesitating. Had he forgotten her name? Lilith couldn’t suppress a sudden flare of anger.

chapter 21 & 22
Dec. 14th, 2009 | 12:23 am
Chapter 21
Silver glared at the back of her head the whole way up the stairs. Lilith didn’t look behind to check; she didn’t need to. She could feel his anger burning into the back of her head, making her neck prickle uncomfortably. It gave her a little thrill—knowing he was angry—a sense of power and control that had been missing ever she stepped foot outside.
Chapter 22
Silver tore into the bathroom like a wild animal. He pulled aside the curtain and grabbed Sam by the scruff of the neck, pulling him away from Lilith, only to slam him against the wall beside her.
Sam’s mouth was an ‘o’ of surprise as his head knocked against the wall. He seemed a little unfocused, his pupils still an all-encompassing black that made Lilith feel queasy. But she was still off-balance and weak, and she couldn’t look away.

chapter 19 & 20 & other stuff
Nov. 29th, 2009 | 11:58 pm
So... Chapter 19 is up (in two parts) as is Chapter 20.
PLUS I wrote a non-canon really silly drabble from Howl's point of view, called In Howl's Head, where he basically has lots of devious thoughts about Silver.
Oh yes, I also forgot I wrote another non-canon silly thing, a write-up of the first half of a date between Jake and Shiva from Addergoole. You can find the first part here.
I have been so remiss in updating here. I'll try harder. So, as an apology, I'll give you an LJ-only teaser, from Chapter 21:
"Protect her from harm however much you want, but don’t protect her from what she needs.”
Lastly, if you haven't heard of it yet, there is now a new shiny website called topwebfiction.com, so if you could vote for Above Ground to show your support, I'd love you forever... Or at least for a week, when you have to renew your vote. :)

chapter 18
Nov. 8th, 2009 | 04:09 pm
Chapter 18 - Part 1
Lilith had been expecting a large, unfriendly place, all gray blocks of poured concrete, dirty and grimy like the city Silver had taken her to a few days before. What she found, instead, was a small town of wood and stone, with orderly streets and carefully decorated facades. Most of the buildings were at most two levels high, although on the other side of town she could see something tall, painted all white; a church, perhaps.
She slowed her pace as they entered the town, examining her surroundings with suppressed awe. Every house had wooden window frames and doors—Wooden! Were they all rich?—and some even had potted flowers on display, outside of their homes where anybody could touch them.

Chapter 18 - Part 2
Back underground in Aspin, where Lilith had grown up, there was a similar market, with noticeably similar stalls. As she followed Amber, Lilith spotted people selling food, drinks, odd little trinkets and knick-knacks; there was even one man selling gadgets, although the stall looked like more of an antiques collection than a tech shop.
And the people at these stalls looked honest, hard-working, their skin rugged and dark, their smiles slow but sincere. It was then Lilith realized why she had felt so comfortable: most of the people here looked human. If it wasn’t for the sun beating down on them all, this place could have been a replica of the local market in Aspin.

a note on cookies
Oct. 25th, 2009 | 05:16 pm
mood:
determined
As you may or may not be aware, I keep track of how readers help promote Above Ground and reward them with cookies. Readers can then spend the cookies on a prize of their choice.
This is all done by hand, and thus can be very time-consuming.
Also, not everyone makes use of the cookies system, either because they hardly ever do any cookie-earning tasks, or they don't buy any rewards, etc.
That's perfectly fine by me. It's optional, after all.
The thing is, it's gotten to the point that my excel sheet is filled with names of people like this, and it's getting a bit cluttered.
So, the plan is thus:
Starting from October 20th 2009, if you do not earn at the very least one cookie by December 1st 2009, you'll lose the chance to redeem your points.
This is a pretty lenient deadline, I think, and will mostly get rid of all the people cluttering up my excel sheet who are unlikely to earn more points.
I won't detract from the total website-wide amount earned, so bonus story counting will continue as usual. I just don't see the point of keeping track of cookie counts for people who don't make use of the system.
Of course, if after December 1st you *do* do a cookie-earning task, you'll be put back on the excel sheet, but you will have lost any points earned prior to that date.
Not sure how often I'll do this, either. I'll see how it goes this time.

chapter 17
Oct. 25th, 2009 | 05:10 pm
Chapter 17
Howl was back to his grinning, bouncy self by the time they reached the other werewolves, all vestiges of his previous seriousness so carefully erased Lilith couldn’t help but wonder whether it was deliberate.
He ignored her sidelong glances and kept tugging her forwards towards the others. Only Silver, Amber, Jake and Fang were there, loitering at the very fringe of the forest, where the trees thinned out and the open sky was ominously visible. Silver and Amber were standing face-to-face, intimately close, talking quietly. Fang was sitting cross-legged on the ground, and Jake was off to one side, leaning against a tree.
They all seemed to notice Lilith and Howl at the same time; they turned their heads simultaneously to watch them approach, an eerie animal-esque movement reminiscent of a hunter scenting its prey. And they were animals; Lilith couldn’t let herself forget that. However human they looked and dressed and behaved, hidden inside was a wild creature.
Even Howl was an animal, she thought, peeking at the boy once more. This was no time for her to make friends, and neither was it the time to indulge her curiosity about the infected; not here where the danger was so close she could taste it.
